Sun Tiantian won the Australian Open mixed doubles

China's Sun Tiantian and her Serbian partner Nenad Zimonjic won the Australian Open mixed doubles title on Sunday afternoon, overcoming Indian pair Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza 7-6, (7-4), 6-4.

They came through a crucial first set tie-breaker but struggled to finish off the Indians, squandering three match points before sealing victory.

The experienced Zimonjic, who now has 19 men's or mixed doubles titles to his name, paid tribute to Sun for carrying them through the past two weeks.

"She was amazing, always smiling and very positive on court," he said.

"It's been a fantastic two weeks and we hope to win more grand slam titles together."

Chinese players have built a reputation for being strong in doubles and Sun already had 11 women's doubles titles to her name, including a gold medal in the 2004 Summer Olympics.
